Andromeda Nebula Audible Audio Edition Ivan Yefremov Cory Thomas Hutcheson TSK Group LLC Books Reviews

  • I have read this book for the first time in the mid 80s when I was around 15 and it inpacted me profoundly. I am re-reading it now from a broader perspective.
The plot is about 2000 years in the future, the speed of light is still a limit . There are star ships flying at near the speed of light and radio communications with other planets on the Great Ring. The Earth society is similar to the one from Star Trek TNG.
A note for American readers - read the word 'communist' as 'post-scarcity' as the negative connotations of the first might obscure one of the most important aspects of the novel. Namely - that the evolution of society naturaly leads to a state of peace, without wars and uncontrolled competition. People are educated to contol their destructive impulses and live in harmony, this principle being unversal across every planet. That may seem a little naive, especially regarding the developments in psychology and anthropology during the last half century. By 'naive' I don't mean implausible, but rather that the historical explanation coud be more mature from todays perspective. Let's not forget this is a book from the 50s. The author firmly believes such a harmonious society is possible and his writing is quite convincing.
My understanding of good sci-fi is the use of author's imagination for exploring alternative forms of social organisation, not the usual projecting of current day moeurs on hi-tech weapons.
Ivan Efremov ranges among my favorite writers along with Ursula Le Guin, Strugatsky bros. and Clifford Simak.
